3D printing of a building: Let's talk about it

Engineers, architects, and designers are scrambling to bring 3D printed building to market. While the technology is still in the R&D stage, it is already clear that 3D printing of building will reinvent contruction in the coming decades.

While the 3D printing of buildings is in the very early stages of development, it is projected to grow exponentially in the coming two decades as the production process become increasingly efficent and cheaper. Unlike conventional construction techniques, where the cost of designing architectural blueprints is high, construction materials are expensive, labor costs are steep, and the time necessary to erect the structures is lenght, 3D printing is not effected by these factors.

Three-dimensional printing can use the cheapest building materials on Earth, sand and rock, as well any kind of discarded waste materials, all from locally avaiable sources, thereby avoiding the high cost of traditional building materials and the equally high logistical costs of delivering them on site. The additive process of building up a structure layer by layer provides a further saving on the materials used in construction.

The building frame is erected with very little human labor compared to traditional construction and can be put up ina fraction of the time.

Lastly, the marginal cost of generating electricity to power the 3D printer could approach zero by relying on locally harvest renewable energy, making it conceivable that, at least in the not-too-distant future, a small building could cost little more than wht it takes to round up the rocks, sand, recyclable material, and others feedstock nearby.

Collengworld as new ideas incubator, desire to trigger a participate dialog about this topic, talking about real experimentation cases such as small houses for emergency situation, modular contructions and so on.
How can this technology change our way of thinking, planning and executing projects?
How the designing process should adapt to this future standard?

We would like to create a brand new kind of documentation that sums up every idea and innovative sparkle we will manage to achieve in our exchange. Furthermore, we like to research and produce real designs to make this documentation always enhanceable, accessibe to associations which already are working in this same field and everyone who may need it.

This is possible only working together, and together we will:

  • Define what project, technologies, details or expedients we are going to study
  • Define how we are going to achieve our goals
  • Define a new way of cooperate using all the new technologies we have access to.

You may ask yourself: "Why should I bother?"

This way of building will be the soon the world's new standard in construction. Take advantage of it will assure us, not only to be an innovator and amongst the firsts studying this field, but also harness our creativity and potential as designers, engineers or scientist.
